Wait, “Happy” was originally Cee-Lo’s song, not Pharrell’s?

I bet Cee-Lo isn’t feeling too Happy right now!

So this whole time I’ve been thinking Pharrell had the hit song of the year that kicked started his career back into hyper drive as the best music producer, and this whole time the song was originally meant for Cee-Lo?

Pharrell admitted during an interview with Howard Stern that Happy was intended for Cee-Lo, but “the power’s that be” thought the song didn’t fit Cee-Lo’s style, and handed the track back to Williams to sing instead.

“He sounded amazing on it. I mean, he burns my version! But the … how do I say this diplomatically? Um … he … um … The powers that be, at the time, did not see it fit for him.”

The Happy producer went on to say that Cee-Lo was beyond “gracious” when the song came out and did well anyway, and there were no hard feelings.
