Rapper DMC of RUN D.M.C. recently went IN on today’s mainstream Hip Hop music and rappers!
The 49 year old MC had a lot to say to one of Britian’s top newspaper’s Metro, regarding the state of Hip Hop and why he thinks it’s become “disrespectful” and “immature.”
DMC,(real name Darryl McDaniels) aired out his frustrations about recent Hip Hop trends and even name dropped top contenders such as Lil Wayne and Jay Z, calling them out on their shit!
“Lil Wayne, Jay Z ain’t hot, it’s just they’re programmed so many times people are brainwashed.”
He goes on to point out how Hip Hop music has become very one sided in it’s image. The majority of mainstream rap music all have the same message and context, without providing an alternative viewpoint for listeners. Everything revolves around money, drugs, women (most commonly referred to as bitches, hoes, bad-bitches, strippers, etc.) and crime.
“A rapper will use this excuse – ‘man they don’t go after Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis when they make their violent movies’ and I go ‘if you’re going to use that excuse get off the mic, don’t produce.’ I’ll personally kick your ass out of hip hop cos if you’re using that excuse go be an actor…”
“If you make a record about a gun, on that very same record or album there’s gotta be a record about not using a gun. If you’re making a record on the b**** or the h*es, there’s got to be a record about your aunt who worked all of the days of her life to send all her children to college…”
“The reason why hip hop exists is because it started out with good intentions, once all the good intentions left the music became polluted…”
I would usually call rants like this hating, if it wasn’t for the fact that DMC HAS A LOT of valid points in his agurment!
Much of today’s rap music is trash, anyone who argues otherwise is either stupid, naive, or trying to be a smart ass.
This wouldn’t be half as bad, if like McDaniels mentioned, there was more balance in mainstream Hip Hop. These days, if you want anything substantial from Hip Hop music you have to look anywhere BUT radio; internet, festivals, satellite stations, mix-tapes, etc.
Unfortunately, the way the business is built and how the market is structured now, there is no HUGE demand for any other type of mainstream rap music other than what we’re currently getting.
That’s where fans need to step up and support music more!
Because right now, even people like Trinidad James can acquire a record deal worth an estimated $2 million while more talented MC’s may never see the light of the stage.
