Ne-Yo’s radio friendly single Let Me Love You (Until You Learn To Love Yourself), released back in July of this year, has officially gone Platinum this month.
The international lead single from his 5th studio album R.E.D. debuted on Billboard’s Top 200 chart at number 4. Now, five months later, its already reached Platinum status.
Which is good news, because Ne-Yo’s last album, Libra Scale, flopped HARD! And the lead single “Beautiful Monster,” only did well in the U.K.
Ne-Yo is used to Platinum, he should know better!
The good news also comes on the heels of Ne-Yo’s departure from Island Def Jam… as he is now under Motown, and working as Senior VP.
(I mean, shit, if you want to make a name for yourself at a new company, that’s how it’s done)
However, there is one thing that bothers me about Ne-Yo’s song. Okay, two things, I hate that long ass title! But besides that, it’s the lyrics. They’re full of shit and you all know it!
While Ne-Yo is known for his his song writing skills, he called on pop writer extraordinaire Sia (who has worked with everyone from Rihanna to Zero 7) to pen the lyrics for this hit.
I don’t care how much Euro pop you throw at these lyrics, (Sia, I love you, but no) they are beyond stupid and unrealistic.
No man is gonna take the time out to help a grown woman learn how to love…and on top of that, learn how to love herself.
I know some of you are shaking your heads, but answer me this…would you do that shit? Didn’t think so.
Women, please don’t look to pop songs as a “self help” alternative to save your love life, or lack there of.
Otherwise you’ll spend forever waiting around for a man to make you feel good about you.
Allowing another person to have the power to lift you up or put you down…
The next thing you know, he’ll be yelling this at you instead of singing sweet nothings in your ear:
And he would be 100 percent right.
Learn how to love your damn self… by your damn self!!
I believe Kat Williams said it best, and I quote: “How the fuck can I fuck up how you feel about you, simple bitch?” People, wise words so take note…and Ne-Yo, congrats!
