I knew it would probably take a miracle to get a Director lie Ava DuVernay to sign on to do a movie like Marvel’s The Black Panther…
And I was right!
The Selma Director made it official during an interview with Essence Magazine that she would not be directing the super hero flick due to differences in opinion regarding the movie’s focus.
“I’m not signing on to direct ‘Black Panther’… I think I’ll just say we had different ideas about what the story would be. Marvel has a certain way of doing things and I think they’re fantastic and a lot of people love what they do. I loved that they reached out to me.”
DuVernay shared with the magazine that she met not only with the lead actor, Chadwick Boseman, but also the writers and Marvel execs; but the groups couldn’t agree on the movie’s main direction.
“I loved meeting Chadwick and writers and all the Marvel execs… In the end, it comes down to story and perspective. And we just didn’t see eye to eye. Better for me to realize that now than cite creative differences later.”
Nevertheless, DuVernay will go on to produce another project of hers along side Harpo Productions, called Queen Sugar. It’s a drama series based on the book by author Natalie Baszile, and will air on the Oprah Winfrey Network channel, OWN.
Sad to see she won’t be directing Black Panther, though.
